Interesting details from modern iMac teardown

Many websites have focused about what was an apart inside iFix’s teardown: which the label found on the back of the iMac mentioned, “Designed by Apple inside California, Assembled inside USA.” There’s a lot of speculation about whether Apple has returned to manufacture machines the U.S. plus built a factory; or when the device is custom-built or perhaps a standard model; or whether it was produced or refurbished; or speculation about an unknown Mexican maquiladora generating Macs.  

None of the stories focus found on the hot iMac hardware plus implications for buying plus repair. The model was the base device of the new series.

Firstly, the modern model’s screen is held inside area with adhesive instead of magnets. This makes the the machine surprisingly difficult to repair plus absolutely beyond the normal DIY job. While the RAM, difficult drive, plus CPU are upgradable, the function associated is considerable.

If you’re purchasing this machine, make certain that to receive everything we may need preconfigured. Folks that would have upgraded a base iMac must take virtually everything aside to reach the normal suspects.

Looking at the logic board, the iFixit post points to a hole passing from the board along with a set of traces. These are for the Fusion Drive way.

We bought the “bargain-basement” variation of the iMac. We’re presuming which the more-expensive version—one which has the built-to-order Fusion drive option—has this connector soldered onto the board, along with a 128GB SSD placed into mentioned connector.

In addition, the iMac’s difficult drive is interesting. Apple moved to a 2.5-inch computer drive rather of the 3.5-inch drive employed inside past iMacs. The device inside the iFixit post had been a 1TB drive.

A rubbery housing is lightly adhered to the edges of the difficult drive under the upper plus lower difficult plastic bezels.

This shape is far different from what we’ve enjoyed before. Because the internal components are more tightly packed than before, little vibrations could carry through more components. The rubber housing dampens the vibrations within the spinning difficult drive so that they are not perpetuated throughout the device.

This assertion sounds like speculation to me, yet it may be right. There is a concern which difficult drive micro-vibrations hit performance inside host forces, that was mitigated by installing a specialized isolation technologies inside the racks plus mounts. But, the research looked at numbers of forces vibrating inside a rack. Could these micro-vibrations impact a single drive?

Perhaps the rubber housing is connected to concentrating airflow inside the newly-designed enclosure. The post claims the model has a single, heavier enthusiast, down from 3 small fans inside the past shape. The rubber covered the sides of the drive, exiting open the wider side with all the drive’s electronics.
